8 Questions Every Parent Asks About Ortho-K

Considering Ortho-K for your child? You're not alone — and you probably have questions. Here are the 8 questions we hear most often from Auckland parents, answered honestly by our optometry team.
1. "Will It Hurt My Child?"
No. Ortho-K lenses are designed for overnight comfort. Most children report mild awareness of the lens for the first 2-3 nights — similar to the feeling of a new retainer on teeth. By the end of the first week, the vast majority of children say they can't feel the lenses at all. Unlike daytime contacts, your child's eyes are closed while wearing Ortho-K, which significantly improves comfort.
2. "What's the Youngest Age My Child Can Start?"
Children as young as 6 have been successfully fitted with Ortho-K. The ideal starting age depends on your child's prescription, rate of myopia progression, and maturity level. Children who are progressing rapidly (more than -0.50 per year) benefit most from starting early, when the potential for slowing progression is greatest. At NVISION, we'll assess your child individually and give you an honest recommendation.
3. "How Much Does It Cost — and Is It Covered by Insurance?"
At NVISION, the initial Ortho-K treatment is $2,275 (including lenses, fitting, and all follow-up appointments). Replacement lenses are $1,600 per pair, typically needed every 1-2 years. Some Southern Cross plans provide partial cover, and government subsidies may apply for children. We recommend checking with your insurer before your appointment. For a full cost breakdown, see our Ortho-K pricing guide.
4. "Can My Child Still Play Sports?"
Yes — this is actually one of the biggest benefits. Because Ortho-K lenses are only worn at night, your child has completely clear, unaided vision during the day. No glasses sliding down their nose during rugby, no contacts drying out during swimming, no goggles fogging up. Many of our young Ortho-K patients are active in sports and say it's transformed their experience.
5. "What If My Child Rubs Their Eyes or the Lens Falls Out at Night?"
Ortho-K lenses fit snugly to the cornea — they don't move around like soft contacts. It's very uncommon for a lens to dislodge during sleep. If your child rubs their eyes, the lens may shift slightly, but this rarely causes problems. We'll teach your child to check their lenses in the morning and what to do in the unlikely event a lens moves out of position.
6. "How Long Until We See Results?"
Most children notice a significant improvement in their unaided vision within the first week. By 2-4 weeks of consistent nightly wear, the full effect is usually achieved. Some children see a dramatic change after just one night — though it varies. The myopia-slowing benefit accumulates over months and years, so consistency is important.
7. "What Happens If We Stop Ortho-K?"
Ortho-K is completely reversible. If your child stops wearing the lenses, their cornea will return to its original shape within 1-3 weeks, and their vision will go back to what it was before. This means there's no permanent change to your child's eyes — which many parents find reassuring. It also means your child can transition to other correction methods (or LASIK when they're older) at any time.
