All About Proper Eyecare in Auckland, NZ

June 30th, 2021

Our eyes are our tickets to making sense of the world around us; we rely on them a whole lot without a doubt! Over time though, as we age, our eyes are inevitably prone to developing certain diseases, such as vision loss.

We understand how worrisome that sounds, but fret not because there is always a bright side to things! The good news is that it can be prevented! So see? There’s nothing to worry about, although being extra mindful of eyecare may certainly be beneficial for you!

In order to prevent and slow down any eye diseases, it’s important that our pair of orbs get the much-needed, high-quality care and treatment they deserve.

We have taken the liberty to list down some helpful tips for you.

Give Your Eyes a Break

We use our eyes for many things, for every single waking day of our lives, except for when we’re sleeping of course! We use it for reading, watching, and basically, sightseeing. Nowadays, we rely a lot on our gadgets to get some work done or simply to pass some time. Eventually, our eyes get strained. Physically, we get tired from any strenuous activities that our bodies do; the same goes for our eyes.

Working without blinking can cause our eyes more harm than what we think, such as a bad case of dry eyes; which we do not want to happen, of course! Having said that, try to blink as much as possible because it’s one effective way for our eyes to produce moisture.

Another effective way to give your eyes the break it needs is to apply the 20-20-20 rule; which is to look away from your monitor or book for every 20 minutes by looking at something else that’s 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds long.

In short, do not hesitate to look away from what you’re doing and give your eyes the break they need!

Keep An Eye On Your Diet

Apparently, what we eat definitely has an impact on your eyes too. Filling our plate with meals that are packed with antioxidants, omega-3-fatty acids, lutein, and vitamins C and E, can help steer us clear from any potential vision problems.

We have a few recommendations which you can include in your meals:

  • Citrus fruits

  • Green, leafy vegetables

  • Carrots

  • Salmon and pork meat

Wear Eye Protection Gears When Necessary

There are instances when our eyes need some protection accessory for when while we’re working. For example, if you are working in a laboratory or factory, wearing eye goggles is one of the safety protocols that you must adhere to, since certain hazardous materials may get in your eyes.

Moreover, even recreational activities such as water sports and ice hockey can lead to an eye injury; which is why wearing protective eye gears is a must.

Shade Your Eyes With Sunglasses

As much as we would like to bask in the beauty of Mr. Sun, its ray of lights may bring some damages to our eyes, such as excessive tearing, blindness, sensitivity to light, and blurry vision, just to name a few instances. Eventually, it can lead to more serious conditions such as cataracts and keratitis.

This is where sunglasses can come in handy; not only are they fashionable but at the same time they are made to protect our eyes from harm.  Talk about keeping our eyes healthy and fabulous in style! When looking for the perfect pair of sunglasses, make sure to look into ones that can block both UVA  (Ultraviolet A) and UVB (Ultraviolet B).

Read With The Lights On

Sometimes, we read in the dark out of convenience, provided that there’s the tiniest hint of light that can let us read through whatever we’re looking at. Although it’s been said that reading in the dark or with lowlight won’t cause any long-lasting damage, it can still do some harm to our eyes. Less light means more work for our eyes, which will then result in faster eyestrain and fatigue; and we already know what will happen if our eyes strain too often.

To prevent any problems that may arise, make sure to keep the lights on or adjust your lighting to a brighter setting.
